Giving Life Meaning
Have you thought about what you want people to say about you after you’re gone? Can you hear the voice saying, “He was a great man.” Or “She really will be missed.” What else do they say?
One of the strangest phenomena of life is to engage in a work that will last long after death. Isn’t that a lot like investing all your money so that future generations can bare interest on it? Perhaps, yet if you look deep in your own heart, you’ll find something drives you to make this kind of contribution---something drives every human being to find a purpose that lives on after death.
Do you hope to memorialize your name? Have a name that is whispered with reverent awe? Do you hope to have your face carved upon 50 ft of granite rock? Is the answer really that simple? Is the purpose of lifetime contribution an ego-driven desire for a mortal being to have an immortal name or is it something more?
A child alive today will die tomorrow. A baby that had the potential to be the next Einstein will die from complication is at birth. The circumstances of life are not set in stone. We are not all meant to live life through to old age. We’ve grown to perceive life3 as a full cycle with a certain number of years in between. If all of those years aren’t lived out, it’s a tragedy. A tragedy because a human’s potential was never realized. A tragedy because a spark was snuffed out before it ever became a flame.
By virtue of inhabiting a body we accept these risks. We expose our mortal flesh to the laws of the physical environment around us. The trade off isn’t so bad when you think about it. The problem comes when we construct mortal fantasies of what life should be like. When life doesn’t conform to our fantasy we grow upset, frustrated, or depressed.
We are alive; let us live. We have the ability to experience; let us experience. We have the ability to learn; let us learn. The meaning of life can be grasped in a moment. A moment so brief it often evades our perception.
What meaning stands behind the dramatic unfolding of life? What single truth can we grasp and hang onto for dear life when all other truths around us seem to fade with time?
These moments are strung together in a series we call events. These events are strung together in a series we call life. When we seize the moment and bend it according to our will, a will driven by the spirit deep inside us, then we have discovered the meaning of life, a meaning for us that shall go on long after we depart this Earth.

One thing that you may observe is on how easy it is for your mind to build negative thought upon negative thought. The chatter not only does not stop but it spins a drama that traps and limits you.
From now on, regularly do this exercise instead. Spin an uplifting story that runs like a movie script. Some visualization will be helpful. You build on a story with a positive outline. The longer you can tell this story to yourself the better. It is also best if you can make this story one about having all your goals achieved. Replace Negative Influences with positive Ones
It is important that you identify external negative factors in your life which may be holding your thoughts hostage. For instance, your mental state can become toxic by being around friends who are negative. If you are not vigilant enough, you will start to adopt their thoughts as your own. Hence, be alert to what your negative influences are. If they come from certain friends, limit your exposure to them as much as you can. Refrain from discussing your plans with people who will be unsupportive of your dreams and goals.
Instead surround yourself with thoughts and actions from people who will empower you.
From being uninspired and de-motivated, you will begin to feel uplifted and driven to greater self growth. The positive energy that they vibrate will start affecting the self talk that you engage in as well.
Present Tense Messages
You may find yourself daunted by the many things you need to do in order to reach your goals. It just seems overwhelming to become the success that you secretly desire for. Your mind gets caught up in an endless stream of worry.
What may be helpful is to concentrate on steps you can take in the present. If you find yourself becoming stuck, stop and say, “What can I do right now?” Change your internal talk from a future anxiety ridden one to one that is about the more manageable present. You cannot control what will happen in the future but you can take the necessary steps now that will build a better tomorrow. Taking the necessary steps require you to focus your thoughts and inner talk on Now.
Confront Fears
Fear is often what holds you back from your success. You are scared of taking chances because you fear losing the security that you enjoy now. You try to convince yourself that you are happy in your current state when in fact, you are not. Your self talk may sound positive in your attempt to lie to yourself. But somehow, there is an inner knowing that you are short changing yourself.
Ask yourself what you are afraid of. What can be the worst that can happen? Take a step-by-step approach in breaking down your fears and see if there is any way round to looking at things more positively. When you confront your fears, you will often realize that the worst case scenario is not as bad as you think. In fact, the benefits of change are worth the risk. Your inner talk begins to change at this point.

美国哈佛大学名教授凯屈莱奇是研究莎士比亚的权威，有一次他在讲坛上教授莎士比亚课程不小心一脚踏空，跌到讲坛下面．他站起身来，气势巍峨对那些学生说：教了四十年书，这是我第一次跌落到听众一样的水平！
1.古希腊学者阿基米德死于进攻西西里岛的罗马敌兵之手（死前他还在主：“不要弄坏我的圆”。）后，人们为纪念他便在其墓碑上刻上球内切于圆柱的图形，以纪念他发现球的体积和表面积均为其外切圆柱体积和表面积的三分之二。2.伽罗华生于离巴黎不远的一个小城镇，父亲是学校校长，还当过多年市长。家庭的影响使伽罗华一向勇往直前，无所畏惧。1823年，12岁的伽罗华离开双亲到巴黎求学，他不满足呆板的课堂灌输，自己去找最难的数学原著研究，一些老师也给他很大帮助。老师们对他的评价是“只宜在数学的尖端领域里工作”。 3.阿基米德公元前287年出生在意大利半岛南端西西里岛的叙拉古。父亲是位数学家兼天文学家。阿基米德从小有良好的家庭教养，11岁就被送到当时希腊文化中心的亚历山大城去学习。在这座号称"智慧之都"的名城里，阿基米德博阅群书，汲取了许多的知识，并且做了欧几里得学生埃拉托塞和卡农的门生，钻研《几何原本》。 世纪德国数学家鲁道夫，花了毕生精力，把圆周率算到小数后35位，后人称之为鲁 道夫数，他死后别人便把这个数刻到他的墓碑上。 瑞士数学家雅谷·伯努利，生前对螺线（被誉为生命之线）有研究，他死之后，墓碑上 就刻着一条对数螺线，同时碑文上还写着：“我虽然改变了，但却和原来一样”。这是一句既刻划螺线性质又象征他对数学热爱的双关语 世纪最杰出的数学家之一的冯·诺依曼．众所周知，1946年发明的电子计算机，大大促进了科学技术的进步，大大促进了社会生活的进步．鉴于冯·诺依曼在发明电子计算机中所起到关键性作用，他被西方人誉为"计算机之父".1911年一1921年，冯·诺依曼在布达佩斯的卢瑟伦中学读书期间，就崭露头角而深受老师的器重．在费克特老师的个别指导下并合作发表了第一篇数学论文，此时冯·诺依曼还不到18岁.6.祖冲之在数学上的杰出成就，是关于圆周率的计算．秦汉以前，人们以"径一周三"做为圆周率，这就是"古率"．后来发现古率误差太大，圆周率应是"圆径一而周三有余"，不过究竟余多少，意见不一．直到三国时期，刘徽提出了计算圆周率的科学方法--"割圆术"，用圆内接正多边形的周长来逼近圆周长．刘徽计算到圆内接96边形， 求得π=，并指出，内接正多边形的边数越多，所求得的π值越精确．祖冲之在前人成就的基础上，经过刻苦钻研，反复演算，求出π在与之间．并得出了π分数形式的近似值，取为约率 ，取为密率，其中取六位小数是，它是分子分母在1000以内最接近π值的分数．祖冲之究竟用什么方法得出这一结果，现在无从考查．若设想他按刘徽的"割圆术"方法去求的话，就要计算到圆内接16，384边形，这需要化费多少时间和付出多么巨大的劳动啊！由此可见他在治学上的顽强毅力和聪敏才智是令人钦佩的．祖冲之计算得出的密率， 外国数学家获得同样结果，已是一千多年以后的事了．为了纪念祖冲之的杰出贡献，有些外国数学史家建议把π=叫做"祖率"． 8.塞乐斯生于公元前624年，是古希腊第一位闻名世界的大数学家。他原是一位很精明的商人，靠卖橄榄油积累了相当财富后，塞乐斯便专心从事科学研究和旅行。他勤奋好学，同时又不迷信古人，勇于探索，勇于创造，积极思考问题。他的家乡离埃及不太远，所以他常去埃及旅行。在那里，塞乐斯认识了古埃及人在几千年间积累的丰富数学知识。他游历埃及时，曾用一种巧妙的方法算出了金字塔的高度，使古埃及国王阿美西斯钦羡不已。9.高斯，德国著名数学家，并有“数学王子”的美誉。小时候高斯家里很穷，且他父亲不认为学问有何用，但高斯依旧喜欢看书，话说在小时候，冬天吃完饭后他父亲就会要他上床睡觉，以节省燃油，但当他上床睡觉时，他会将芜菁的内部挖空，里面塞入棉布卷，当成灯来使用，以继续读书，高斯有一个很出名的故事：用很短的时间计算出了小学老师布置的任务：对自然数从1到100的求和。他所使用的方法是：对50对构造成和101的数列求和（1＋100，2＋99，3＋98……），同时得到结果：5050。这一年，高斯9岁。10.天才由于积累，聪明在于勤奋。 —————华罗庚华罗庚的故事1930 年的一天，清华大学数学系主任熊庆来，坐在办公室里看一本《科学》杂志。看着看着，不禁拍案叫绝：“这个华罗庚是哪国留学生？” “他是在哪个大学教书的？”最后还是一位江苏籍的教员慢吞吞地说：“我弟弟有个同乡叫华罗庚，他只念过初中。熊庆来惊奇不已，将华罗庚请到清华大学来。从此，华罗庚就成为清华大学数学系助理员。 第二年，他的论文开始在国外著名的数学杂志陆续发表 。几年之后，华罗庚被保送到英国剑桥大学留学。他提出的理论被数学界命名为“华氏定理”。
1、吕蒙读书
吕蒙是三国时吴国的大将，他曾多次立下大功，却不爱读书。于是孙权对吕蒙说：“你现在是大将
军了，肩上担子很重，一定要多读读书，长点见识。”吕蒙便开始读书。慢慢地，他发现书中有很
多以前他根本不知道的东西。一次，他读到孙膑用“减灶计”诱使庞涓轻敌，最后打败庞涓的故
事，感到眼界大开。于是，吕蒙逐渐爱上了读书。
2、顾炎武勤于攻读
顾炎武是明末清初的大学者，他学识渊博，在经学、史学以及诗文诸学上，都有较深的造诣，是当
之无愧的一大名儒。顾炎武从小就勤奋学习，对待学问非常认真。长大后，每当外出旅行时，他都
用马或骡子驮着沉甸甸的书，真正做到“读万卷书，行万里路”。
在游历中，顾炎武还非常重视第一手资料的搜集和整理。如果他走到某地，发现那里的地理、风俗
等情况与自己以往知道的不同，就会打开相关的书本进行核对、校正。顾炎武就这样手不释卷，刻
苦攻读，终于积累了丰富的知识。
3、苏洵发愤

The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. A most curious and useful thing to realize is that one never knows the impression one is creating on otherpeople. One may often guess pretty accurately whether it is good, bad, or indifferent — some people render it unnecessary for one to guess, they practically inform one — but that is not what I mean. Supposing that you came into a drawing room where you were having tea, do you think you would recognize yourself as an individuality? I think not. You would be apt to say to yourself as guests do when disturbed in drawing rooms by other guests: “Who's this chap? See ms rather queer. I hope he won't be a bore.” And yourfirst telling would be slightly hostile. Why, even when you meet yourself in an unsuspected mirror in the very clothes that you have put on that very day and that you know by heart, you are almost always shocked by the realization that you are you. And now and then, when you have gone to the glass to arrange your hair in the full sobriety of early morning, have you not looked on an absolute stranger, and has not that stranger piqued your curiosity? And if it is thus with precise external details of form, colour, and movement, what may it not be with the vague complex effect of the mental and moral individuality?
A man honestly tries to make a good impression. What is the result? The result merely is that his friends,in the privacy of their minds, set him down as a man who tries to make a good impression. If much depends on the result of a sing le interview, or a couple of interviews, a man may conceivably force another to accept an impression of himself which he would like to convey.
