A“Living Lei Feng”----My English Teacher
One afternoon my English teacher and I went to visit a student's mother, who was lying in hospital. As soon as we entered the hospital, something happened.
A 15-year-old girl was carrying a patient, her father, to the doctor's office. Before they reached the office, the old man fell down to the ground, gasping his last①. What a pity to see the girl too weak to do anything for him! Feeling helpless, she did nothing but cry.
At this moment, some people went to help, but were shocked to find that the old man was dying fast. They were too frightened to do anything.
Glancing at me, my English teacher hurried over to the dying man without hesitation②. He knelt on one knee and lifted the old man up. But the man couldn't walk. So my teacher put him on his back. When they reached the door of the office, the patient was dead. Just then a doctor came up and said to my teacher:
“How miserable! Please send your father into the mortuary③.”
“He isn't my teacher's father; it's hers,” I explained to the doctor, pointing to the girl.
“Hers?” replied the doctor in surprise.
“Yes, it's hers. My teacher and I happened to pass by here just now.”
“Your teacher?” the doctor said. “Which school are you from? What's your teacher's name?”
“His name is….” Just then I saw my teacher signaling④ to me with his hand. Clearly he wanted me to stop. But how could I?“He is my English teacher. His name is Zhou Hongdun (周洪敦),”answered I proudly.
Hearing what I said, people around smiled at my English teacher.
“What a good‘living Lei Feng!’” one of them said, deeply moved.

Follow your Heart
Kai-fu Lee (李开复) recently resigned as head of Google China to pursue an exciting new venture — an “idea lab” called Innovation Works (创新工场). His hope is to nurture a new generation of inventors and high-tech enterprises in China. Mr. Lee quoted Steve Jobs (史蒂夫·乔布斯), the co-founder and CEO of Apple, Inc., in his “goodbye” blog post, saying that you must “have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
What does it mean to follow your heart and intuition when we make choices? We all have to make choices every day. Some of them are simple: What should I eat for breakfast? Should I do my homework before or after dinner? Other choices are more complicated: What university should I attend? Which career should I choose? Whom should I marry?
Some people seem to always make the right choices. It seems like “luck” smiles on them. Steve Jobs, now one of the richest people in the world, feels that we make our own luck by paying attention to our feelings. In 1972, Steve enrolled in Reed College (里德学院), but he soon realized that all his working parents’ savings were being spent on his college tuition, which was very expensive. And he “couldn’t see the value in it.” So he decided to drop out. Still wanting to learn, he scraped together enough money to take the classes that really interested him. He followed his curiosity and intuition. His decision to take a calligraphy class, where he learned all about the beauty of letters, turned out to be priceless later on. “If I had never dropped in on that single course in college ... personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.”
You may not know how something you’re doing now will affect your future, but if it feels interesting or important, it probably is. Success isn’t about being lucky. It’s about being prepared and then paying attention when opportunities arise.

The moon all over the world
中秋节的月饼很美味,但中国人从什么时候开始吃月饼的?另外,玉兔为什么能跑到广寒宫和嫦娥姐姐做伴?国外有关月亮的民间传说里也有嫦娥吗?
>In the Tang Dynasty, Chinese people started making round moon cakes as gifts to their relatives (亲属). The custom became popular in the Song Dynasty.
Most Chinese have heard of the story of Chang E and her flight to the moon, but they may not know why there is also a Jade Rabbit (玉兔) in the moon. Here is one of the stories. Three fairies (仙人) changed themselves into poor old men and begged for food from a fox, a monkey, and a rabbit. The fox and the monkey both had food to give to them, but the rabbit had nothing. Seeing that they were still very hungry, he jumped into a fire to offer his own flesh. The fairies were very thankful, so they arranged for him to live in the Moon Palace beside the beautiful and lonely Chang E...
Chinese people often talk about Chang E, “the woman in the moon”, while Western people talk about “the man in the moon”! The man in the moon is an old man with a bundle of sticks (柴枝) on his back, sometimes he carries a lantern with a little dog beside him. Many children in the West know about him from the nursery rhyme (儿歌):
The man in the moon,
Looked out of the moon
And this is what he said,
“Tis time for all children on the Earth①
To think about getting to bed!”
In some other countries, people believe the man in the moon keeps the souls of men and animals. In Malaysia (马来西亚), the man in the moon is an old hunchback (驼背人) sitting under an inverted (倒立的) banyan tree (榕树). He is making a fishing line in order to catch everything on earth. There is also a rat which gnaws (啃) through the fishing line and a cat which chases the rat. So long as this goes on, the world is safe, but if the hunchback completes his fishing line, the world will end!
The Mid-autumn festival falls on October 6 this year. It will fall on these days the next few years:
2007: September 25
2008: September 14
2009: September 3
2010: September 22
