　　拿张艺谋改编的电影来说，他拍过《红高粱》《蚕豆》《大红灯笼高高挂》等，举这几个例子，是因为他们属于一个体系（这是就作品本身而言，当然作为导演，其自己定有自己的特色，不管是什么作品）——与性有关。是从强悍自然到萎缩压抑再到神秘和与其相关的地位之争。这是张的电影中对性的认识，当然也可以从其他方面的话题入手。
　　除了话题，再有就是就某一部作品说事。比如就《菊豆》而言，张是从电影本身的要求出发（据说张善于从摄影的角度出发，而不善于塑造人物），对原作进行改动。首先是淡化背景，作为作品，背景当然很重要，可再电影里，背景可能会太占用观众的视觉，而且背景不合适，在电影的审查上也过不去（在我们这个国家就是这样），淡化背景可以突出故事。再就是压缩人物的生存空间，由原作的农村改到城里的染坊，除了便于集中拍摄，还依托背景利用背景为主人公找到归宿。第三为了突出主题，主人公的归宿到最后都变了，该死的都死了，因为要考虑到观众的接受嘛。
