这是英国高校的课程作业的一种，英国大学的课程考核方式多为论文，而非考试。而课程论文往往有两次机会，其中在学期中提交的论文称为FormativeEssay,这一篇论文是不计分的，但是授课老师会像对待正式的作业一样批改并评分，相当于给了你一次额外的锻炼机会。
