说到英文论文，就不得不说到几个文献索引，比如SCI，EI，SSCI等。其中，科学引文索引（Science Citation Index (SCI)）是目前国际上公认的最具权威的科技文献检索工具。也导致了现在一些院校对硕士、博士的论文要求就是SCI文章多少多少篇。
SCI 是由美国科学情报研究所(Institute for Scientific Information (ISI))于1960年出版的期刊文献检索工具。科学引文索引以S. C. Bradford文献离散律理论、以E. Garfield引文分析理论为主要基础，,通过论文的被引用频次等的统计，,可以对某篇文章、某篇作者所收录的文章、某篇科研单位、某篇期刊，甚至是某个国家或者地区的所有文章进行统计分析，从而判断被分析对象在国际上的学术水平。一般来说，文章被引用的次数越高,说明该文章在所在的研究领域里产生的影响越大,被国际同行的关注程度越高，从而说明文章作者的学术水平越高。而某个期刊整体被引用的次数越多，也说明了该期刊在所在的研究领域内的水平越高，就体现在影响因子越高。把期刊、文章的指标进行量化的结果，在现实中就成了把文章所在期刊的影响因子跟文章的被引用次数成为评价一个科研人员水平的标准了。
在web of knowledge上，通过论文检索功能可以查到相关研究课题各个阶段的文章发表状况以及文章的摘要，还可以交叉索引，得到该文章所引用的参考文献，以及被引用状况等各种非常有用的信息。
SCI收录的主要是自然科学的基础研究论文,所以它的指标主要适用于自然科学方面的基础研究的成果。这样就对偏向工程的科研人员很不公平，因为即使他们付出了很多努力，做了很多应用工作，但是发表的文章很可能不被SCI收录。所以，工程索引（Engineering Index， EI） 就成了另外一个评价标准。EI是美国工程信息公司出版的工程技术类检索工具。1998年的时候被Elsevier购买。它收录了大量工程技术类期刊，范围涉及工程技术各个领域。国内的SCI收录的中文期刊不是很多，但是给EI收录的期刊就不少了。由于EI收录的期刊量比较大，间接也导致EI文章比较容易发表。所以，很多院校并没有把EI文章当作一个评判标准。
除了期刊之外，会议是文章的另外一个来源。科技会议录索引（Index to Scientific &Technical Proceedings，ISTP） 就是用来收录检索会议文章。它成立于1978年，由美国科学情报学会编辑出版。在笔者所在的领域里，会议文章要比期刊文章容易发表的多，而且会议文章基本上是不经过同行评议的，所以质量上也参差不齐。在个人简历基本上是不把会议文章列入的。
