老年心理学是研究老年期个体的心理特征及其变化规律的发展心理学分支，又称老化心理学。它也是新兴老年心理学老年心理学的老年学的组成部分。[1] 由于人的心理活动以神经系统和其他器官功能为基础，并受社会的制约，所以老年心理学涉及生物的和社会的两方面的内容。研究范围包括人的感知觉、学习、记忆、思维等心理过程以及智力、性格、社会适应等心理特点因年老而引起的变化。在西方，最早较系统地阐述老年的心理问题的是霍尔，他在《衰老》一书中，以毕生发展心理学的思想回顾了自己的一生。他反对把老化仅仅看作是人退回早期阶段的一种返归，强调在老年人中老化过程的显著的个别差异。第二次世界大战以后，随着老年人在人口中的比率迅速增加，对心理活动老年化的实验研究及其他研究急剧增多。据报道，在1951～1980年的30年间发表的 7篇有关老年心理研究的综述，共引用了247种杂志，1571篇论文。而1983年发表的一篇综述中，于1975～1981年仅六年间就查阅到4057篇有关成年发展和老年心理的文献。在中国心理学界也有只重视儿童发展而忽视成年与老年心理的倾向。只是从20世纪60年代以来，毕生发展心理学观点逐步被人们所接受以后，老年心理学才成为发展心理学的一个重要部分。[2] 在中国，有关老年心理学和养生学的思想历史悠久，早在春秋战国时期。诸子百家在调摄情志以益寿延年方面就有不少造述。又如唐代孙思邈的《千金翼方》中载：“论曰：人年五十以上，阳气日衰，损与日至，心力渐退，忘前失后，兴居怠惰，计授皆不称心，视听不稳，多退少进，日月不等，万事零落，心无聊赖，健忘嗔怒，情性变异，食饮无妙，寝处不安……，”生动地论述了人在年老过程中的记忆、视觉、听觉、味觉以及性格、情绪状态等的一系列变化。近代老年心理学的研究工作在中国起步较晚。比较系统地开展这方面工作始于20世纪80年代，主要侧重于记忆的老化研究。
