20世纪50年代初Wright在传统Allen试验基础上提出了改良Allen试验方法，以更方便评价手掌双侧血供。改良Allen试验做法：同时压迫受检者一侧尺动脉和桡动脉，举手过心脏水平后（以防止手臂静脉瓣功能不全造成Allen试验假阳性结果）。

患者做伸握拳动作至大鱼际肌红色消退，放开尺动脉压迫，观察手掌部颜色由白变红时间，恢复时间10秒以内，表明尺动脉畅通和掌弓循环良好，Allen试验阳性；反之尺动脉可能堵塞或掌弓循环欠佳，Allen试验阴性。

此种方法大大简化了传统操作，但是它也存在一些问题：如手掌松开时手掌过伸，可能会引起掌弓循环血供减少，造成Allen试验“假阴性”；另外压迫尺动脉可能会在动脉减压后引起短暂的反射性扩张所造成Allen试验“假阳性”。
