问候式寒暄语也称招呼语，通常是人们见面打招呼时所常用的语言，在汉语中比较常见的是 “你去哪？”、“吃了吗？”一类。而英语中常使用“hello”和“How are you”。一般情况下，经过时间沉淀的寒暄用语，有很强的通用性和传统的语言模式，相对简单明了是寒暄的特性。中国人寒暄主要有四个话题：对年龄的询问（例如，孩子们有多大了？），健康状况的关注（例如：最近身体如何啊？）对于行动的关注（例如：哟，忙吗？）和节日的问候（例：过年好啊。）据史书记载上古我们的祖先每天只吃两顿饭。即使这样，穷人也是吃了上顿没下顿，即所谓‘饔飧不继’。所以老百姓见面爱问 “吃了没？”。在改革开放初期，由于食品和服装的问题，是很长一段时间要解决的问题，中国人注意吃，爱谈论吃，所以，“你吃了吗？”，这句话也一直被沿用。产生这一现象的原因是中国人对他人的关注。其次，这句话也反映了中国人对于交际的积极性。
