F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a novel that deals with American dreamto a great extent. In a relatively short novel of nine chapters, Fitzgerald tells the tragicstory of Jay Gatsby's quest for the rich and shallow Daisy. Through the first-personnarrator, Nick Carraway, the emptiness of the materialistic American dream isrevealed and the novel ultimately manifests the failure of this American dream.
The American dream concerns politics as in “The Declaration of Independence”,military affairs as in the participation of America in the World War Ⅰ， economy asabout the matter of material success, moral conventions as about spiritual goodnessand religious freedom, literature as reflected in novels, sports as in the principle“competing fairly, openly and aboveboard”, aesthetics as in the appreciation of thebeauty of happiness, and many other fields. It comes from the old colonist's time,through the Westward Expansion, the Independence War, the Civil War, two worldwars, to the present highly developed society and goes on for ever. It is a method ofcommunication in the way that success is used to show off and that the invisibleuntouchable inner virtues and abilities are to be proved to the society in the form ofvisible success. It is a history of struggle in the sense that people take efforts to makewhat is said and what is done meet. It is the emotional and psychological growth ofindividuals as well as material and spiritual growth of the nation.
The Great Gatsby not only expresses the theme of the disillusioned materialisticAmerican dream, it also constantly urged the society to seek a new cultural insightoutlet---the spiritual American dream, which undoubtedly provides a patch to mendthe already distorted and imperfect American dream culture. So the point is to find abalance between the spiritual and the material. We have experienced and willexperience a lot of adventures or frustrations in our life, we constantly face differenttemptations and moral shortcuts, sometimes we may even vacillate, but what makesus persist and keep striving is the right values and solid faiths, thus bringing usspiritual liberation and inner freedom to live a happy life. That is the power of dream.
The roaring twenties of the United States is the ideal setting for Gatsby's story,but it is only the setting. The story itself is as great as ever. To some degree, theAmerican dream in this story is sublimed to a universal sense which breaks thelimitation of time and space. So any research on the novel and its profound meaningof the American dream will never be outdated.

英语外来语的发展进程
从其它语言中“借"词的现象已有很长的历史了。早在古英语初期·由于和罗马人的联系﹐英语从拉丁语中借用了大量词汇·在古英语时期﹐英语继续借用拉丁词汇,当时大部分是宗教用语。古英语到现代英语的过渡时期﹐随着1066年诺曼征服﹐显现出法语的巨大影响
法语应用于所有政治事务及大部分社会及文化事务。因此,当时的英语语言体现出英语词汇的巨大而显著的变化——大量法语单词的吸收这体现在词汇的所有分支中。现代英语时期﹐文艺复兴使英语词汇发生了很大变化。由于重视对古典文化的研究﹐结果导致大量拉丁词汇的引入。因此为英语外来语的引入打开了新的源泉。
在此之前古英语和中世纪英语中引入了希腊语﹐但都是间接地通过拉丁语或法语。自16世纪以来,英语所借用的语言种类大大增加了,主要有三种罗曼语:法语.西班语和意大利语。英语还从欧洲其它语言中吸收词汇。
Caste和pagoda来自葡萄牙语;bis-muth cobalt , nickle和zinc则来自德语;dock freight和keel来自荷兰语;vadka , troika , ruble和tsar则来自俄语。19世纪和20世纪之交,由于海外探险﹐开拓殖民地以及贸易发展·许多非欧洲国家和地区的语言也用于英语中,英语的发展同外来语的引入是分不开的.外来语已成了英语词汇的一部分。

中日外来语比较的论文没有，不过几年前写过一个汉语中外来词的小文章，倒是被人引用得比较多。在论坛里看到谈及（汉）语言纯洁性的话题，所以想随便谈谈目前汉语所使用的外来语问题。在汉语被边缘化、英语被妖魔化的今天，某些人又认为汉语的纯洁性受到了损害，因而倡议要保卫汉语的国粹性，开展一场全球华人的汉语保卫战云云（“遗失了中国的传统文化之精髓与汉字原形，我们成了数典忘祖的新文盲”王蒙 2004）。这倒与目前亚洲某些国家因狭隘民族主义的思想作祟而产生的所谓“去中国化”的思潮颇为类似，但仅就语言的发展和传承而言，个人认为“语言的纯洁性”这一说法实为伪命题。语言的发展需要借鉴外来语汇，历史上无论哪个民族，都没有出现因为借鉴外来语汇而造成本民族语言颠覆的状况。即使在借鉴程度较高的日本，大量的外来语汇涌入，也没有造成日本本民族文化的没落。相反，由于对外来文化的大量引入，日本文化的丰富多彩性反而得到了发展。现代英语词汇为约200万，日常使用词汇则为30万到50万。相比其他的欧洲语言如法语，日常词汇为7万左右。法语在语法上是屈折形语言，也采用26个拉丁字母，同样也是国际通用的语言之一（估计亿人），但为什么会在词汇量上与英语差别这么大呢？一个重要的原因就是英语吸收了大量的外来语。汉语中的“外来语”一词最初来自日本语的词源研究，其拓展定义为凡无汉语语源关系的且被汉语所借用的词汇单位，叫非汉语语源词汇，即外来语或外来词。非汉语语语源词汇，依据其语源，被分为民族外来语（来自中国少数民族语言）和国际外来语两大类。手里的1990版《汉语外来语辞典》（岑麒祥）共收外来语4207条，多为希腊罗马神话和著名文学作品中的人物形象，较重要的外国人名、地名、药品、化学元素、各国货币及物品名称等。如果说这个算比较专门的外来词收录，我也注意到普及型的《现代汉语词典》，据说将增加附录“今年来出现的新词新意”，增收近2000个大量的外来语，如WTO等词甚至保留了西文字母的拼写而非代以汉字的音译。其实也用不着翻词典，随便列举汉语中已有之英语外来词：啤酒、咖啡、巧克力、沙发、扑克、爵士、吉普车、引擎、罗曼蒂克、沙龙、歇斯底里、逻辑、模特……这些词汇已经在汉语当中根深蒂固了，其中不乏妙手天成的翻译，如幽默一词乃出自林语堂先生的手笔。林语堂先生是个人非常佩服的TWO-FISTED（所谓双手开弓是也）的作家，他的很多作品最初都是先有英文版而后有汉语版，如MY COUNTRY，MY PEOPLE（吾国吾民）、MOMENTS IN PEIKING（京华烟云）等作品我建议凡学英文的中国学生都是应该拜读的。如果说汉语中对于国际外来语的吸收主要是从19世纪中叶开始的（当然不应该忽视因宗教而进入汉语的词汇，如菩萨、佛、天堂、地狱、哈麻尼），那么对于民族外来语的吸收则是和汉语的产生就同时出现的现象，到今天我们已经很难分辨哪些词属于汉语的本源，哪些词又属于其他民族了。看看现代汉语的语音基础北京方言，如来自于蒙语的“胡同”、来自古波斯语（回方言？）的“猫腻”，来自满语的“坎肩”，数不胜数。也许大家知道如今满天飞的清宫剧里“AMO”、“ENI”、“GE`E”，但估计不知道我们出门坐公车的时候，“（车）站”一词是来自蒙古语中的‘JAM’吧？前几天看关于电视剧《汉武大帝》的汉学研究报道，其中谈到有学者认为中国的“剑”实际是游牧民族传来的，“剑”这个词本身就是外来语，是“径路”(又作“轻吕”)的合音。“径路”是北方游牧民族对宝刀的称呼，可能来自伊朗语系或突厥语系。我对伊朗语系的语言没什么了解，但蒙古语里“剑”、“刀”一词发“JIERD”或“ILDE”，似乎可以互为印证。如果要谈汉语中的词源问题，那是肯定说不完。罗嗦了这么多，只是想说说保护汉语的纯洁性其实并无必要。包括对于目前汉语中出现的各种“非规范式”语言，如“……的说”（确属日语外来词），应该持宽容的态度，任其发展，经过时间检验，留与大家取舍。肯定汉语中外来语的存在，承认文化之间的影响，绝非民族虚无主义。尽管在很多时候我都表现为一个（非极端的）民族主义者和宗教“狂热”分子，但在语言和文化上，还是多点宽容，少点大帽子吧，“打倒XX帝国主义”之类的口号，在脱离了时代背景的时候使用，只感觉有点滑稽。. 最近又看到新闻里浙江某大学某生论证宁波方言属于阿尔泰语系的可能性，说已经找到宁波方言里与达斡尔、蒙古语等语音相近的词数十个云云。由此推断，脑壳发烧的同志看看我上文举的不止数十个的汉语外来词例子，大概也可以得出汉语也属于印欧语系的臆断了。何况语系这种东西，就算是专业人士也说不大清楚。新X方掏钱做的一期电视节目，某老师随口说汉语和日语是一个语系。我想对于这种有争议问题，我是肯定不敢在电视上胡说八道的。如果单凭日文里对汉字的借用就说它们是同一语系，那么蒙古人民共和国现在使用罗马注音字母书写，估计是不能算阿尔泰语系了……最权威的中国语言学著作认识到汉语是一个语族，而不是一个单独的语言。被广泛接受的《中国大百科全书;语言文字卷》第523页b栏的表述是：“汉语在语言系属分类中相当于一个语族地位。”在上位分类中，历史语言学家一致认为汉语与藏-缅语有明显的联系。因此，藏-缅语和汉语共同组成一个独立的语系即汉-藏语系。为了保持术语学和分类学上的一贯性，“汉语”一词在英语中最好表示成“Sinitic”(Sino→Sinitic)。像其他语族一样，汉语经历了复杂的发展过程。在其漫长的历史中，汉语与印-欧语、南岛语、南亚语、藏-缅语、突厥语、通古斯语、蒙古语和其他语言发生了相互影响。汉语和与汉语有接触的诸语言以及语族的联系的性质，尚有待更充分研究和确定。
