A Review of Robinson Crusoe--

This is a novel by the English author Daniel Defoe, published in 1719. It is one of the most popular adventure novels in all literature. It is the story of Bobinson Crusoe, an Englishman who is shipwrecked in a lonely tropical island. He builds himself a hut, grows his own food, and becomes self-sufficient. After 23 years he meets with a group of cannibals and rescues one of their prisoners, a young native whome he calls Friday.Crusoe and his“man”Friday become close friends, and when they are finally rescued four years later, both return to England.

Robinson Crusoe was partly based on the actual deeds of Alexander Selkirk, an 18th-century Scottish sailor who spent almost five years alone on a desert island. This novel is famous for its lovely details and its expression of belief in man's ability when left alone in nature.

My one breath reads off the fairy tale which "Sea Daughter" this Anderson writes to give me to be specially deep. "Sea Daughter" this article everybody is certainly very familiar! "Sea Daughter" in the fairy tale leading character lives in the sea deep place, is a mermaid. She might pafor more than 300 years years in the seabed world, then changed into the froth, finished her life happiness. Her life is longer than several times the humanity, but she does not have the human unique that kind “not to extinguish the soul”. In order to obtain this inspiration she to give up in the sea life, she endures these pain from already the fish tail changed into a two person leg. Afterward she liked a prince, obtained a humanity's soul. That prince and the world female has married, her hope did not have. If she continues to become “the sea daughter”after must assassinate that prince, may return to her in the family member, returns to belongs to her from already world. But she does not have to do this actually from has thrown in entering the sea to change into the froth. I like "Sea Daughter". It caused me to understand the life was valuable. Must have the strong will in anticipation in any surf-ace, goes bravely facing it. In this book, I have not only known some happy stories, but also receives the very big inspiration education.

Last night, I read a moving short story named A Boy Buys God. Bondi’s parents died in his early age and he is raised by his uncle. But one day, his uncle falls down from scaffold and God want to take his life away. Bondi heard that God is an amazing thing that can save the life of his uncle. Therefore, he goes out with one dollar to buy God. But he doesn’t buy one until the 29th shop’s door opened. It’s an elderly man who is willing to help him after Bondi telling his story.

Several days later, Bondi’s uncle gets great treatment by the most outstanding doctors in the world and finally he totally recovery. In the end, he knows what saves his life—love. It’s Bondi’s pure love to him that saves his love. On the other side, it’s his love to Bondi that saves himself. Therefore, we can say that love is mutual and rewarded.

Tonight I watched the movie for the third time. I really enjoy this film so much.

So what's your choice between being a common person or a hero with people's respects? Most people will choose the latter. But what will be your choice if the cost is laying your lover among the risks? What will it be if the cost is you can never tell the girl, who you love so much, that you love her? The spider man had this contradiction. But finally he still chose the latter, not in order to be a hero, but to make this word peaceful.

I was so moved by the words the Aunt Mary said:

You will never guess what he wants to be, the spider man. He knows the hero when he sees one, too a few characters out there, flying all around out there, saving old girls like me. Lord knows kids like Henry need hero courageous, sacrificing for people, setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero. People enthrone them, cheer them, scream their names and years later they will tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse the one who taught them to hold on to stand longer. I believe there is a hero in all of us. They keep us be honest, give us strength, make us noble, and finally allow us to die with proud. Ever though sometimes we have to initiatively give up the thing we want most, even our dreams. Spider man did that for Henry, so he wants to know where he is gone. He needs him.

The spider man got much from these words, so did I. And what about you? what's the hero lying in you?

I read the book of Robinson Crusoe, their captors.

Article describes multiple sailing in the whole island, Crusoe masters of extraordinary survival 28 years experience, strive for survival, show the ingenuity and a man with indomitable perseverance in the face of hardship persistent existence desire, the lonely and eager to rescue the mood. In a lonely island overcome Robinson was done with fear, a savage and said he was "on Friday, they get along with each other, then built on Friday, Crusoe one kind of warm friendship." I also enjoy the disclosure of the business concept: Crusoe each sailing and adventure has clear commercial purpose, with his own property and calculating profit, he will also oneself life the island is his territory, in addition to reveal its economic thought, I admire John Robinson's rich, more learning his strong initiative and spirit of adventure, early efforts, hard work, and perfect kindness thought!

After a weeks persistence, I finally finished reading the foreign famous book "the old man and the sea". The book impressed me so much that I couldnt forget it. This novel mainly describes an old man fishing alone at sea. He caught a big fish and tied its head and upper body to the side of the boat. But when he met a shark, the old man tried his best to fight with the shark. The shark ate all the fish he could eat, but there were still 800 pounds left.

Reading this book, my heart cant be calm for a long time. This ordinary and respectable old man made me deeply understand: "a man should not be overwhelmed by any difficulties, and should do his best to fight with the hardships in life.

I really admire grandpa Santiagos tough spirit. When I read about my grandfathers fierce fight with sharks, I dont know whether I should be nervous or worried about my grandfather. However, my grandfather always sticks to the optimistic spirit to deal with some great difficulties. When I saw it, I couldnt help thinking of myself. Whenever I met some difficulties, I always felt very upset, bored, and wanted to escape from reality. If you look at Grandpa Santiago, no matter what difficulties he encounters, he never flinches, but bravely copes with them!

We should do the same in life. We should not be greedy and afraid of death. We should have confidence in ourselves. Even if we encounter many difficulties, we should never let it down. We should be brave to eliminate it.

I believe that with my efforts, I must become as brave and brave as Grandpa Santiago.

Several years ago, when I was a little girl I have already read the novel Jane Eyre. At that time, I was attracted by the touching story. But today, after watching the movie, I was moved by Jane, the adamant, independent, brave and honest girl. Why did we say Jane was an adamant and independent girl? Let’s look at her childhood. Her parents died when she was a little girl, so she was brought up by her aunt Mrs. Reed, an acute and ruthless woman. Jane led a very bad life in her house. They treated her as badly as a ragtag. But Jane didn’t surrender. Later, she was sent to Lowood school,an orphan school. In there she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. Mr. Brocklehurste even asked Jane to stand on the chair and vilipended her in front of all the students. But Jane didn’t yielded. And her only friend Helen died, Jane was very sad, but she was not depressive all the time. Instead, she studied and worked energetically. At last, she became a teacher of logwood, and later became the family teacher of Adele. From her experience, we could found that Jane was independent; she changed her fate by herself. She suffered more than other girls at her age. She was independent both in physically and mentally.

Jane was brave. She dared to say no to Mr. Brocklehurst, cut her beautiful hair with Helen, and pull the horse for Mr. Rochester. What’s more, she dared to accepted Mr. Rochester’s love and pursuit of her own happy life. Though she said:“ Do you think because I am poor, obscure, and little. I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!—I have as much soul as you—-and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it was hard for you to leave me, as it is not for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh; it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as it both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet,. In her opinion, everyone is the same at the God’s feet. God hadn’t given her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gave her a kind mind and a thinking brain. These words expressed complete1y Jane ’s rebellious spirit. She told him her own feeling, and emphasized that they were equal.

As we know, there was strict distinguish in social stratum at that time. Mr. Rochester was in the high society, but Jane was only a family teacher. They were in quite different social stratums. What’s worse, in that society, people’s sense of love was on the basis of money. For the sake of money they could marry anyone even though the husband or the wife was an idiot on their eyes, money was everything, money was marriage. But unfortunately Jane was very poor. That’s to say, Jane should receive much rumor from society. In fact, she didn’t afraid of it. On the contrary, she accepted with no hesitation. When she knew Rochester’s wife was dead and he was blind, she went to look after Rochester determinedly. She didn’t care about anything else. And I still remember at the party, all the people from the high society laughed at Jane, they looked down upon Jane. She kept silent though her heart was very exciting. And to their surprise, Miss Ingrain was proved to be a loser, Jane defeated her though Jane had no property and beauty.Jane’ s plainness, poverty, position and disposition were contrasted to Ingrain obviously.Jane drove away those aristocrats from competitive stage.High position and great wealth showed by noble class was put aside.Jane got glorious victory.

Jane was self-respected and self-love. When she knew Rochester had a mad wife and she was still alive. Jane left. She couldn’t bare an incomplete love. She left her lover Rochester with contradiction and pain. Though she still loved him very much. She chose another road, which was endless. She was kind and strict to the moral concept. She couldn’t accept herself do something against the morality. She was self-respect.

To sum up, Jane was a charming girl .What she attracted us was not the beautiful face, lovely figure, and sweet voice .But her brave heart, intelligent brain and adamant character. So we didn’t surprise that Mr. Rochester chose Jane as his bride instead of Miss Ingrain. Because Jane was much mature and richer in soul. As a girl, I should learn from Jane. Especially in the materialistic society we should be in charge of our own fate. Don’t depend on others all the time. We should be independent .Don’t lead a luxurious life and in hope of marring a rich man, thinking that your husband would change your fate, your social position. That’s silly. We should realize that only depend on your own struggle then you could really charge your fate. What’s more, we need to be self-respect and self-love. As far as I am concerned, as a girl if you don’t respect and love yourself, so how do you require others to respect you? In short, we need to learn from Jane Eyre.

The old man and the sea is the work of Hemingway. Hemingway is a very unique writer. He has experienced two world wars and created a classic tough man image based on himself.

This book mainly describes an old fisherman named Santiago, who has not caught fish for eighty-four days in a row. On the eighty fifth day, he caught a big fish and dueled with the big fish for two days and two nights. Finally, the big fish was stabbed to death and tied to the ships side. But I met a shark on my way home. The old man fought with the shark to death, but the big fish was eaten up by the shark. At last, when he came back home, he only had a pair of white fish bones.

From this book, we can feel the old mans spirit of never giving in. When the old man faced the sharks, he knew that he could not defeat the sharks, but he still took out all the tools that could be used as weapons to fight with the sharks. Isnt that the noble quality we should have when facing difficulties, life and destiny?

Life is endless pursuit, it is full of ups and downs, but as long as we face it with a confident and tenacious heart like the old man, we will become the ultimate winner!

Jane Eyre, it’s one of my favorite English novels. Another one is Pride and prejudice. The two ladies, Jane and Elizabeth, are some kind of similar. Both of them are independent, long for true love, and defend against the old rules. They don’t have beautiful face, but they have beautiful minds.

When story began, Jane was a little girl living with her aunts and cousins. They didn’t like her, scolded her, treated her just like a nursemaid, and even locked her in the Red House. Later, she was sent to the Lowood School, where she met Helen, her friend. As time went by, the little poor girl grew up. Then she became a governess for a ten-year-old girl at Thornfield, where she met Mr. Rochester, her master. As a governess at Thornfield, she tasted the pleasures and pains of love. She fell in love with Rochester but had to leave him for some reasons. She found shelter at Moor House, where she focused on teaching and rejected Mr. River’s marriage. At the end, Jane returned to Thronfield after Mr. Rochester was blind. They have a quiet wedding:

“I know what it is to be love and be loved. No woman has ever been closer to her husband than I am to Edward. I am my husband’s life, and he is mine. We are always together, and have never had enough of each other’s company.”

Jane had a bad childhood, but it didn’t affect her much. She read books behind the thick curtain; she got education for eight years in poor condition; she was intelligent, sensible and wise. At the relationship with Edward Rochester, she was quite calm. The governess with her beautiful, pure and frank soul, move Edward. Rochester was rich, clever but a little weird. Jane thought she didn’t really know him and never sure whether he was serious or joking. So she kept a distance with him. Fortunately, she came across the distance and expressed her love to Mr. Rochester:

“Do you think I can watch another woman become your bride? Do you think I’m a machine, without feelings? Do you think, because I’m small and poor and plain, that I have no soul and no heart? Well, you’re wrong! I have as much soul and heart as you. It’s my spirit that speaks to your spirit! We are equal in the sight of God!”

I think when you heard of these words, you would stand at Jane’s side definitely. And that’s love I long for. In our real life, there are many examples that ladies lose themselves and become dependent after marriage. They give up their careers and the husband and kids become their center. For another instance, some ladies get married to the man they don’t love but possess a lot. They regard their husbands as ATMs. For the former, they lose themselves in marriage; for the latter, they do exchange with marriage. Besides, some graduates fall in love with others due to loneliness. You can see such lovers break up upon several months. They do not take love seriously; they do not prepare to love somebody; even, they do not know what love is and how to love. They just pretend to know.

I’ve heard the words: who is a real man? A real man is the one you stay with but you can be yourself. When I was in high school, a Chinese poem named To the Oak, impressed me a lot. I have to say, that’s the love I appreciate.

比如:背单词“and”,他就会一遍遍地念and,and ,a,n,d,and我个人不主张这种方法。

Reading the old man and the sea About the author Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest American writers in 20th century, is the representative of “lost generation” writer. He was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. worked as a reporter after graduating from high school in 1917.,amd served as an ambulance driver in the Italian infantry and was wounded just before his 19th birthday. Hospitalized, Hemingway fell in love with an older nurse.

In 1954, Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. In his life, Hemingway married four times and wrote numerous essays, short stories and novels. The effects of Hemingway's lifelong depressions, illnesses and accidents caught up with him. In July 1961, he committed suicide in Ketchum, Idaho.

About the book The old man and the sea is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power , it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman ,down on his luck ,and his supreme ordeal ---a relentless , agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream . Here Hemingway recasts , in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat , of personal triumph won from loss . Written in 1952 ,this hugely successfully novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a huge part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature .

About the old man Santiago is described as a failure by other fishermen in the village for catching no fish for a long time . However, he should be regarded as a hero all his life , when he had played the hand game with the great Negro from Cienfuegos who was the strongest man on the docks ;when he fight with that large marlin ; when he struggle with the sharks . You can find his optimism, confidence, wisdom, perseverance and bravery anywhere . I admire him not only because these but also his regarding these as the things he had to do , the rules he had to obey . Such a man is really a man , a marvelous man . All the characters of him is worth being learned not only in Hemingway’s times ,but for ever ; not only for a certain kind of man , but for all of us .Let’s always remember his word “But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

if we have a book ,we will not be felling of being longly

When I'm free or in trouble,I always take out a book and read quietly. In no time,I've put my heart into it so that I'll forget all the troubles. It's in this way that I've formed the habit of reading in any time.

Little boys as I was,I was interest in picture books and storybooks.I was struck by them.No sooner had I entered the middle school than I began to read novel, plays, essays and so on.I found I could get much from them.Little by little I took great interest in literature and last term I won the first prize in the composition contest among middle-school students in Zhe Jiang.

Reading “The Emperor's New Clothes”,I had to let out a burst of laughter over his fool.“The Little Match Girl” couldn't keep me from crying for her misery.“ Robinson Crusoe” took me into a strange world full of danger. And I was also deeply impressed by Helen Keller's patience and perseverance… Besides these, books also tell me other thing -how to be a man and how to tell the difference between right and wrong. In a word, good books can make me know what I didn't before. So I think of a good book as my best friend.

I'll never forget this famous saying,“ Good books are best friends who never turn their backs upon us.”

In the Chinese book, there is a text mainly teach us how to choose the book, the teacher let us read this text, after I read, I have a little understand the meaning of it, and then wait for the teacher to talk about, and I more understand, this is mainly about reading more books, can make us more knowledge.

I remember the teacher said, read more books can be happy life, so I have to try, for a week to read a book, I read the time, my mother said, "you are so good, sitting here to read seriously" "I was good, not now". Mother said, "this is good, reading is to read, not to the teachers and parents to see".

I now finally understand the benefits and benefits of reading books, reading the benefits are: 1, 2, rich knowledge, can be happy life. I think reading has become more fun, because reading the original is the rich, that it's good to read, can kill two birds with one stone, can be a wealth of knowledge and a happy life.

So I read more books will be for us a lot of help, so I here remind you that read mainly we don't pretend to understand.

The Cambrian explosion

Kingdom come

Chinese palaeontologists hope to explain the rise of the animals

AMONG the mysteries of evolution, one of the most profound is what exactly happened at the beginning of the Cambrian period.

Before that period, which started 541m years ago and ran on for 56m years, life was a modest thing.

Bacteria had been around for about 3 billion years, but for most of this time they had had the Earth to themselves.

Seaweeds, jellyfish-like creatures, sponges and the odd worm do start to put in an appearance a few million years before the Cambrian begins.

But red in tooth and claw the Precambrian was not—for neither teeth nor claws existed.

Then, in the 20m-year blink of a geological eye, animals arrived in force.

Most of the main groups of the animal kingdom—arthropods, brachiopods, coelenterates, echinoderms, molluscs and even chordates, the branch from which vertebrates went on to develop—are found in the fossil beds of the Cambrian.

The sudden evolution of this megafauna is known as the Cambrian explosion.

But two centuries after it was noticed, in the mountains of Wales after which the Cambrian period is named, nobody knows what detonated it.

A group of Chinese scientists, led by Zhu Maoyan of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, plan to change that with a project called “From the Snowball Earth to the Cambrian explosion: the evolution of life and environment 600m years ago”.

The “Snowball Earth” refers to a series of ice ages that happened between 725m and 541m years ago.

These were, at their maxima, among the most extensive glaciations in the Earth’s history.

They alternated, though, with periods that make the modern tropics seem chilly: the planet’s average temperature was sometimes as high as 50C.

Add the fact that a supercontinent was breaking up at this time, and you have a picture of a world in chaos.

Just the sort of thing that might drive evolution.

Dr Zhu and his colleagues hope to find out exactly how these environmental changes correspond to changes in the fossil record.

The animals’ carnival

Fortunately, China’s fossil record for this period is rich.

Until recently, the only known fossils of Precambrian animals were what is called the Ediacaran fauna—a handful of strange creatures found in Australia, Canada and the English Midlands that lived in the Ediacaran period, between 635m and 541m years ago, and which bear little resemblance to what came afterwards.

In 1998, however, a team led by Chen Junyuan, also of the Nanjing Institute, and another led by Xiao Shuhai of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, in America, discovered a 580m-year-old Lagersttte—a place where fossils are particularly well preserved—in a geological formation called the Doushantuo, which spreads out across southern China.

Portents of the modern world

This Lagersttte has yielded many previously unknown species, including microscopic sponges, small tubular organisms of unknown nature, things that look like jellyfish but might not be and a range of what appear to be embryos that show bilateral symmetry.

What these embryos would have grown into is unclear. But some might be the ancestors of the Cambrian megafauna.

To try to link the evolution of these species with changes in the environment, Chu Xuelei of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing and his colleagues have been looking at carbon isotopes in the Doushantuo rocks.

They have found that the proportion of 12C—a light isotope of carbon that is more easily incorporated by living organisms into organic matter than its heavy cousin, 13C—increased on at least three occasions during the Ediacaran period.

They suggest these increases mark moments when the amount of oxygen in seawater went up, because more oxygen would mean more oxidisation of buried organic matter. That would liberate its 12C, for incorporation into rocks.

Each of Dr Chu’s oxidation events corresponds with an increase in the size, complexity and diversity of life, both plant and animal.

What triggered what, however, is unclear.

There may have been an increase in photosynthesis because there were more algae around.

Or eroded material from newly formed mountains may have buried organic matter that would otherwise have reacted with oxygen, leading to a build-up of the gas.

The last—and most dramatic—rise in oxygen took place towards the end of the Ediacaran.

Follow-up work by Dr Zhu, in nine other sections of the Doushantuo formation, suggests this surge started just after the final Precambrian glacial period about 560m years ago, and went on for 9m years.

These dates overlap with those of signs of oxidation found in rocks in other parts of the world, confirming that whatever was going on affected the entire planet.

Dr Zhu suspects this global environmental shift propelled the evolution of complex animals.

Dr Zhu also plans to push back before the Ediacaran period.

Other researchers have found fossils of algae and wormlike creatures in rocks in northern China that pre-date the end of the Marinoan glaciation, 635m years ago, which marks the boundary between the Ediacaran and the Cryogenian period that precedes it.

Such fossils are hard to study, so Dr Zhu will use new imaging technologies that can look at them without having to clean away the surrounding rock, and are also able to detect traces of fossil organic matter invisible to the eye.

Besides digging back before the Ediacaran, the new project’s researchers also intend to analyse the unfolding of the Cambrian explosion itself by taking advantage of other Lagersttten—for China has several that date from the Cambrian.

Dr Chen, indeed, first made his name in 1984, when he excavated one at Chengjiang in Yunnan province.

It dates from 525m years ago, which make it 20m years older than the most famous CambrianLagersttte in the West, the Burgess shale of British Columbia, in Canada.

The project’s researchers plan to see how, evolutionarily speaking, the various Lagerst?tten relate to one another, to try to determine exactly when different groups of organisms emerged.

They will also look at the chemistry of elements other than carbon and oxygen—particularly nitrogen and phosphorous, which are essential to life, and sulphur, which often indicates the absence of oxygen and is thus antithetical to much animal life.

Dr Zhu hopes to map changes in the distribution of these chemicals across time and space.

He will assess how these changes correlate, whether they are related to weathering, mountain building and the ebb and flow of glaciers, how they could have affected the evolution of life, and how plants and animals might themselves have altered the chemistry of air and sea.

Most ambitiously, Dr Zhu, Dr Xiao and their colleagues hope to drill right through several fossiliferous sites in southern China where Ediacaran rocks turn seamlessly into Cambrian ones.

Such places are valuable because in most parts of the world there is a gap, known as an unconformity, between the Ediacaran and the Cambrian.

Unconformities are places where rocks have been eroded before new ones are deposited, and the widespread Ediacaran-Cambrian unconformity has been a big obstacle to understanding the Cambrian explosion.

With luck, then, a mystery first noticed in the Welsh mountains in the early 19th century will be solved in the Chinese ones in the early 21st.

If it is, the origin of the animal kingdom will have become clear, and an important gap in the history of humanity itself will have been filled.

Water in Brazil

Nor any drop to drink

Dry weather and a growing population spell rationing

BRAZIL has the world's biggest reserves of fresh water. That most of it sits in the sparsely populated Amazon has not historically stopped Brazilians in the drier, more populous south taking it for granted. No longer. Landlords in S?o Paulo, who are wont to hose down pavements with gallons of potable water, have taken to using brooms instead. Notices in lifts and on the metro implore paulistanos to take shorter showers and re-use coffee mugs.

S?o Paulo state, home to one-fifth of Brazil's population and one-third of its economic activity, is suffering the worst drought since records began in 1930. Pitiful rainfall and high rates of evaporation in scorching heat have caused the volume of water stored in the Cantareira system of reservoirs, which supplies 10m people, to dip below 12% of capacity. This time last year, at the end of what is nominally the wet season, it stood at 64%.

On April 21st the governor, Geraldo Alckmin, warned that from May consumers will be fined for increasing their water use. Those who cut consumption are already rewarded with discounts on their bills. The city will tap three basins supplying other parts of the state, but since these reservoirs have also been hit by drought and supply hydropower plants, fears of blackouts are rising.

Without a downpour, Sabesp, the state water utility, expects Cantareira's levels to sink beneath the pipes which link reservoirs to consumers a week after S?o Paulo hosts the opening game of the football World Cup on June 12th. To tide the city over until rains resume in November, it is installing kit to pump half of the 400 billion litres of reserves beneath the pipes, at a cost of 80m reais. The company says this “dead volume”, never before used, is perfectly treatable. Some experts have expressed concerns about its quality.

Mr Alckmin has not ruled out tightening the spigots. Flow from taps in parts of S?o Paulo has already become a trickle, for which Sabesp blames maintenance work. Widespread cuts could hurt the governor's re-election bid in October. Hours after he announced the latest measures, a thirsty mob set fire to a bus.

Paulistanos use more water than most Brazilians, but lose less of it to leaks: 35%, compared with a national average of 39%. Sabesp, listed on the New York Stock Exchange but majority-owned by the state government, is a paragon of good governance, says John Briscoe, a water expert at Harvard and a former head of the World Bank mission in Brazil.

The problem exposed by the drought is that supply has not kept pace with the rising urban population. Facing a jumble of overlapping municipal, state and federal regulations, investment in storage, distribution and treatment has lagged behind. And not just in S?o Paulo; the national water regulator has warned that 16 projects in the ten biggest cities must be completed by 2015 to prevent chronic water shortages over the next decade. So far only five are finished; work on some has not begun. Short-term measures should keep the water trickling for now. But the well of temporary solutions will eventually run dry.

Corporate governance in Germany

Diversifying the board

German boards have long been cosy men's clubs. But things are changing

HERMANN JOSEF ABS liked to joke, What's the difference between a doghouse and the supervisory board?

The doghouse is for the dog; the supervisory board is for the cat.

For those unfamiliar with the nuances of German humour, for the cat is slang for something like trash.

The late banker would know: while running Deutsche Bank from 1957 to 1967, he also sat on dozens of supervisory boards.

This was the peak of Deutschland AG, a clique of long-serving bosses, autocratic chairmen, do-nothing board members and their financier friends.

Big German companies' supervisory boards are supposed to act as a check on their management boards.

But in practice their relations were too cosy for this.

This past year the stumbles of two titans seemed to highlight how much corporate power is still concentrated in few hands in the Germanspeaking world.

As 2013 began Gerhard Cromme was chairman of the supervisory boards of both Siemens, an industrial conglomerate, and ThyssenKrupp, a steelmaker.

But big losses at foreign mills and heavy fines over a cartel case cost him the chairmanship at ThyssenKrupp.

Then in July, a boardroom bunfight at Siemens ended with the departure of Peter Lscher, the chief executive.

Mr Cromme belatedly called for his firing—but only after hiring him and protecting him for years.

Josef Ackermann, a Swiss former boss of Deutsche Bank and a Siemens board member, had defended Mr Lscher.

When Mr Lscher went, so did he.

Shortly before this he had quit as chairman of Zurich, a Swiss insurer, whose chief financial officer had committed suicide, leaving a note berating Mr Ackermann.

Now he has no big corporate job, there have been reports that Mr Ackermann may have to step down as a trustee of the World Economic Forum after its gabfest in Davos this week.

At first glance, corporate power in Germany still looks male, German and concentrated.

But its boardrooms are slowly getting more diverse.

In 2003 the average supervisory-board member at a public company sat on 1.9 boards; now the figure is 1.6.

A 2001 cut in tax on sales of shares let banks and insurance companies, which played big roles as lenders and part-owners, start disentangling themselves from companies.

Into the gaps, and onto the boards, has come a new generation of more active members.

Boards have little choice but to be sharper, says Christoph Schalast of Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.

Many companies are now paying fines and settlements for their behaviour before the financial crisis.

A 2010 change in the law doubled the statute of limitations for such misdeeds to ten years.

Progress on making boards more international is slower.

Eight of the largest 30 public companies have foreign bosses, but the rest of their boards' members are predominantly German, even at the country's most multinational firms.

But Burkhard Schwenker, the boss of Roland Berger, a consulting firm, says that counting passports is simplistic: what matters more is international experience, which German firms increasingly look for when recruiting both management-and supervisory-board members.

If boards are becoming more professional and diverse, is accumulation of board seats a bad thing in itself?

Jrg Rocholl, the president of the European School for Management and Technology, says that studies disagree on whether busy board members are better or worse for profits.

But he agrees that boards are becoming more capable, and says this has been a factor in Germany's economic revival.

Pay for German board members is going up; but these days, members are earning it.

I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures. Many people pretend that they understand modern art. They always tell you what a picture is 'about'. Of course, many pictures are not 'about' anything. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. I think that young children often appreciate modern pictures better than anyone else. They notice more. My sister is only seven, but she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not. She came into my room yesterday. 'What are you doing?' she asked. 'I'm hanging this picture on the wall,' I answered. 'It's a new one. Do you like it?' She looked at it critically for a moment. 'It's all right,' she said, 'but isn't it upside down?' I looked at it again. She was right! It was! Late in the afternoon, the boys put up their tent in the middle of a field. As soon as this was done, they cooked a meal over an open fire. They were all hungry and the food *** elled good. After a wonderful meal, they told stories and sang songs by the campfire. But some time later it began to rain. The boys felt tired so they put out the fire and crept into their tent. Their sleeping bags were warm and fortable, so they all slept soundly. In the middle of the night, two boys woke up and began shouting. The tent was full of water! They all leapt out of their sleeping bags and hurried outside. It was raining heavily and they found that a stream had formed in the field. The stream wound its way across the field and then flowed right under their tent! Editors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their readers with unimportant facts and statistics. Last year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a new African republic. When the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refused to publish it. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace.' The editor at once sent the journalist a fax instructing him to find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall. The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts, but he took a long time to send them. Meanwhile, the editor was getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to press. He sent the journalist two urgent telegrams, but received no reply. He sent yet another telegram rming the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be fired. When the journalist again failed to reply, the editor reluctantly published the article as it had originally been written. A week later, the editor at last received a telegram from the journalist. Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well. However, he had at last been allowed to send a cable in which he rmed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1084 steps leading to the 15-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.
